Back To Sun

Sunspots are cooler areas in the sun's photoshphere, caused by strong magnetic fields.  These magnetic fields block heat from the sun's inner layers, and can cause huge storms on the sun's surface.  These storms can spew tremendous streams of gas, called prominences.  Prominences can explode into space as far as 100,000 miles, at speeds of more than 1,200 miles per hour.
