SUMMARY
The sun is the center of our solar system. All of the other
bodies in the
solar system revolve around it. The sun is the solar system's only
natural source of light, heat and energy.
Composition
The sun is a giant ball of burning hydrogen gas.
In the center of the sun is the core. The core is the hottest part of the
sun, with temperatures higher than 25 million degrees Fahrenheit. The core is
surrounded by two layers: the radiative zone and the convective zone. The surface of
the sun, called the photosphere, is made up of boiling gases that can reach temperatures
higher than ten thousand degrees Fahrenheit.

Atmosphere
The sun has an inner and outer atmosphere. The
inner atmosphere is called the chromosphere, while the outer atmosphere is called the
corona. The corona is millions of miles thick.

Size
The sun is by far the largest body in our solar
system. It is over 600 times larger than every planet, moon, asteroid, comet, and
meteor combined! The sun's diameter is 865,400 miles, which is over 100 times larger than
the Earth's diameter.

Orbit
| The sun is the center of the solar system, its
gravity is what keeps all the planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and meteors from flying
out into space. |
