SUMMARY
| Saturn, the sixth planet from the sun, is a very beautiful planet.
Saturn was named after the Roman god of fertilitly. Saturn is famous for its huge
rings, and was believed for a long time to be the only planet with rings. Now we
know that all of the gas giants have rings, but none are as impressive as Saturn's. |
Composition
| Saturn is composed mostly of helium and hydrogen, surrounding a small, solid
core. Saturn is not very dense. If it were possible to place the entire planet in a huge
ocean, it would float! |
Atmosphere
| Saturn's atmosphere is very similar to Jupiter's. Its thick layer of
swirling hydrogen clouds create dark and light bands across the planet. Very strong
winds have been recorded in Saturn's atmosphere, reaching speeds of over 1,100 miles per
hour, which is more than six times faster than the most violent hurricanes on Earth. |
Size
| Saturn is the second-largest planet in the Solar System, next to
Jupiter. It has a diameter of 74, 898 miles. Saturn could hold about 750
Earths inside it. |
Orbit
| Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun, between Jupiter and Uranus. Saturn is
over 886 million miles from the sun. Like Jupiter, Saturn rotates very quickly, and
moves very fast around its orbit. A day on Saturn is about ten hours long, and a
year takes about 30 Earth years. |
