SUMMARY
| Jupiter, named after the ruler of the Roman gods, is the largest planet in our
solar system. Jupiter is the greatest of the gas giants, the 4 planets farthest from
the sun which are composed mostly of gas. The gas giants are all very large in size,
all are composed of gas surrounding a small, solid core, all have several moons, and all
have at least one ring. |
Composition
| Jupiter is composed mostly of hydrogen and helium; it is not very dense. The
surface of Jupiter is a huge ocean of liquid hydrogen which is thousands of miles
deep. Beneath this ocean is a solid core which is very hot. Very little is
known about the gas giants, as we we have only just begun to explore them. |
Atmosphere
| Jupiter's atmosphere is composed of hydrogen, helium, methane, ammonia,
ethane, and other gases. This atmosphere would be deadly to life as we know it. The
outer layer of Jupiter's atmosphere is a very thick layer of hydrogen clouds. These clouds
are hundreds of miles deep, and are constantly moving at very high speeds. These
clouds are very colorful, with giant dark and light stripes covering the planet. |
Size
| Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. It is over one and a
half times larger than every other planets combined. Jupiter has a diameter of 88,
846 miles, over ten times the diameter of Earth. More than 1,300 Earths could fit
inside Jupiter if it were hollow. |
