There are two main types of eclipses.

Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow covers the moon.

lunareclipse

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the moon and
the sun, causing Earth's shadow to cover the moon.

Solar Eclipse occurs when the moon blocks our view of the sun.

solareclipse
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks our view of the sun.
The moon's shadow falls on Earth in a cone shape.  The area on
Earth that touches the tip of the cone will see a total eclipse
the sun will be completely dark.  The areas on Earth outside
the cone will see an annular eclipse.
