SUMMARY
Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is the only
planet
we know of that has life. Earth is also the only planet with
large quantities of liquid water on its surface.
Composition
Earth is made up mostly of rock and metal. A thin layer of solid
rock called the crust is what we live on. Three-quarters of the
crust is covered with water. Beneath the crust is a deep layer
of molten rock, called the mantle.
Atmosphere
Earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere. It
is composed mainly of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, dust and
water. The bottom layer of the atmosphere, called the troposphere,
is where we live. Most weather occurs in the troposphere.
Size
Earth is the fifth largest planet, larger than Mercury, Venus,
Mars, and Pluto. Earth has a diameter of 7,926 miles. Earth is
very similar in size to Venus.
Orbit
Earth is 93,000,000 miles away from the sun. It is 26,000,000
miles from Venus and 48,000,000 miles from Mars.
Earth takes one year to complete an orbit around the sun, and 24
hours to spin on its vertical axis. |
